A
new software for breeding statistics
by Magnus Forsberg |
| |
| A few
years back a friend of mine ( Peter Hansson ) developed a
breeding program that could be downloaded from the internet
as a Beta version. Now he has completed his work and a new
version. Species 2.5 is now ready. Over the years
I have tried several different softwares from the UK and US,
and have found them all of no interest. The reason is that
they do not do anything. They work as regular notebooks, but
pen and paper is just as good as this. Species 2.5
is different. When Peter developed this, he was in contact
with several breeders, to get there opinion on what a program
like this should include. I have now worked with this program
to keep data on all my animals for four years and I am very
impressed. |

The main menus
in this program are: Species, Individuals, Clutches,
Eggs, Morphs, Terrarium/Incubators, Breeders and Pictures.
All of these are in several ways connected to one another.
To describe this program in words is not the easiest
but here goes...
It all starts with the menu Species,
where you put in all the species that you keep. When
you double click on each species, another menu will
appear. This is where you can put in Terra Typica, who
described it and when. Under this data you will later
find a line with shortest, average and longest incubation
times for this species based upon your data, regarding
eggs. |
| The next menu
you have to add data to is the Terrarium/Incubator
menu. Here you will find on a scroll list of
all the species that you have added, and on each species
you will add temperatures and humidity in that terrarium.
As soon as that is done you will get the average temperatures
and humidity data as well. This you can do as many times
as you like and later get diagrams showing data on environment
in each terrarium for a period of time that you chose.
In this menu you also add your incubator(s) and the
data for that/those. Each terrarium or incubator will
get a number that you will use when adding individuals
or eggs. |
 |
|
The
next menu to open is the Individuals
menu. Here you add all your breeder animals. You add
the number of the terrarium they live in, and from different
scroll lists you add the species, sex, date of purchase
and from whom you bought it from. As soon as the name
and address from whom you bought it is added, these
data will also be found in the Breeders
menu. You also have a line for these individuals cites
number. You also have a line telling you how old this
animal is (years, months, days). The program works with
realtime, winch means that it updates itself several
times per minute. You also have several underlinings
in this window where you can see offspring from this
animal, add pictures and breeding statistics. Every
animal you add here automatically get its own ID number
used by the program. (Yes I know the picture is not
P.nigristriata and is P.flavigularis) |

Now
you are started and are hopefully starting to get
eggs...
Now its time to open the Clutches
menu. Under the button “add new clutches”
you will find a scrollist with species where you chose
the species in question. Add the number of eggs and
date (the date is already there if the eggs are laid
that day, otherwise just change the date). You also
have two scroll lists; male and female. These are
the parents, and on that list you find the ID numbers
from all animals of the chosen species that you have
added in the Individuals menu. Just
click on who is mother and who is father. The last
thing is to chose the number of the incubator where
the clutch will be incubated, or if they are glued
in situ then OK. When that is done this clutch of
eggs also get an ID number. After the first eggs from
this species have hatched you will also get a estimated
time of hatch, as soon as you add more clutches. Double
clicking on this clutch will open another window,
showing all data including the incubator and its data. |
|
|
| |
| When
this is done you can open the Egg menu. Here
you will find the number of eggs that this clutch contains,
and all eggs have there own ID number. You can also see all
data on each egg regarding parents, the incubator and for
how long they have been in the incubator. As soon as one egg
hatch you double click on it and add the date of hatch. Then
the hatchling who gets the same ID number as the egg is automatically
is moved to the individual menu. All animals in the individual
menu will be in alphabetic order with the ID numbers in front.
Males will be named Ma 1 as an example and females
Fe 2 and unsexed hatchlings with only the ID number.
After a while you should have several clutches of eggs and
then you will automatically be warned with one or two stars
besides the egg data when the average incubation time is passed;
based on any previous data |
| |
| There
is a lot more to say about this program, but it would take
to long to include all. A few things though: When opening
a menu you will get all animals, clutches or eggs in the program.
Species and individuals are in alphabetic order, and clutches
and eggs are also in alphabetic order but also after dates
laid. If marking for instance Phelsuma nigistriata in the
species menu and the clicking on individuals, clutches, eggs
or terrariums you will only get all data on that particular
species. By double clicking a specific clutch, you will open
the Egg menu with only the eggs included
in this clutch. The program also supports animals that bear
live young. You can also print out all open menus, and also
print out relationship trees on each individual. |
| |
| To
end this little introduction I would like to say that for
all serious and statistic interested breeder this program
is really something to recommend. It also make tracks of bloodlines
easy for everyone to maintain a stable terrarium population
for future generations to come. For anyone interested in the
program, the CD can be ordered from me at a cost of 105 Eu. |
