The purpose of this site is to educate
people about day geckos. I have 5 years of experience
with the keeping and breeding of these magnificent animals.
What started with one single Phelsuma madagascariensis
grandis, has grown very fast to a collection with more
than 150 animals of 30 species.
I got my first day gecko for my birthday. It was a Phelsuma
madagascariensis grandis. I had seen them in the local
pet shop and just wanted to have one. I asked for information
from the shop owner. He gave me a lot of incorrect information,
which I didn't understand at the time. That’s the
problem with some of the local pet shops, they don’t
know how to keep day geckos themselves and therefore can
give you wrong information. It’s better to buy geckos
from shops that specialize in reptiles and amphibians
or better yet; just try to find a hobbyist who keeps them.
Unfortunately because of the wrong information that I
was given, and the unhealthy condition of the gecko when
I got it, the day gecko died within a few months. But
I had already fallen in love with these magnificent animals.
When I went to the reptile shop that
had treated my sick day gecko and told him the bad news,
he gave me a male peacock day gecko (Phelsuma quadriocellata
quadriocellata) for free.

My
original tank was smaller in size and was better suited
to the smaller Phelsuma q. quadriocella.
I found a keeper in a free ads paper. I went there and bought
a peacock female. I had never seen that many species before.
It was amazing to see so many of those bright coloured animals
in a small shed. He had around 20 pairs of 8 species. I
didn’t know where to start looking. I was also given
a lot of useful information that I could use from his experience.
Within 2 months I had 2 eggs off my pair Phelsuma q. quadriocellata
and out of the first clutch 1 hatched.
I decided I’d like to have a large well planted vivarium
in my room. I ordered one with the shop where I got the
peacock male. The size where 53 x 25 x 53 inches (LWH) in
this tank I housed the day geckos together with Poison frogs
and Tree frogs.
A half year later somebody offered to make several tanks
for a reasonable price. I ordered 10 tanks. Me and my dad
decided to make a small room (± 20 m²) on the
attic to place the tanks in, this was the start of my Phelsuma
Room.
I joined 3 societies and got to know a lot of people, who
provided me a lot of useful information and helped me to
acquire more interesting species.
At the moment I have around 50 tanks for my adult animals
and 50 for my juveniles. In the years I’ve bred more
then 20 species successfully.
Before you start with these
animals it’s best to get as much information as you
can. There are a lot of societies that can help you to get
the right information and give you names and telephone numbers
of people who can help you. This is also where this site
becomes useful. I hope to be able to offer an informative
site about these fascinating creatures. There is also a
forum for this site, this can be used for questions, advice,
photos and general conversation of the Phelsuma species.
I am proud to present
a large selection with very nice pictures on my website.
If you have any pictures, articles or your own breeding
experiences please do not hesitate to place them on the
forum, this
way other people can learn from them. If you have written
an article/care sheet on any species I may use, please e-mail
it to me. With your permission I will add it onto the site
giving you full credit as the author.
Please enjoy your stay.
